Kenyan Car Import Duty Rates Explained

Kenyan Import Duty Rates Explained (2026) Kenya applies the East African Community (EAC) Common External Tariff (CET). Import duties and taxes are calculated mainly on the CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight). For most goods, the system uses these standard bands:

1. Import Duty (Customs Duty)

  • 0% — Raw materials, capital goods, essential items, and some machinery
  • 10% — Intermediate goods
  • 25% — Most finished consumer goods (standard rate)
  • 35% — Sensitive or protected goods (certain textiles, furniture, some steel products, and in some recent references, selected motor vehicles)

2. Additional Levies (apply to almost all imports)

  • Import Declaration Fee (IDF): Currently 2.5%–3.5% of the customs value (minimum applies in some cases)
  • Railway Development Levy (RDL): 1.5%–2.5% of the customs value
  • VAT: 16% calculated on (CIF + Import Duty + Excise + IDF + RDL)

Special Rules for Motor Vehicles (Cars)Vehicle imports (especially used cars from Japan, UK, China, Germany, etc.) follow a different valuation method and attract higher combined taxes:

  • Import Duty: Most sources list 25% of the customs value (some recent updates reference 35% for certain passenger cars — always confirm current rate).
  • Excise Duty: Depends on engine capacity and fuel type
    • Petrol/Diesel ≤ 1,500 cc: usually 20%
    • Larger engines: 25%–35%
    • Fully Electric Vehicles (EVs): preferential rate (often 10%)
  • VAT: 16%
  • IDF and RDL: As above

Important valuation rule:

For used vehicles, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) does not use your purchase invoice. Instead, it applies the official Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) of an equivalent new vehicle in Kenya, then deducts depreciation based on the car’s age (up to a maximum of 8 years from first registration). All taxes are then calculated on this adjusted customs value.Key Restrictions for Cars

  • Maximum age: 8 years from year of first registration
  • Must be right-hand drive (left-hand drive generally prohibited for private use)
  • Must pass roadworthiness inspection (KEBS/QISJ or equivalent)

Example Impact

Taxes and levies on a used passenger car commonly add 60–90% or more to the customs value, depending on age, engine size, and current CRSP. Total landed cost can therefore be significantly higher than the purchase price overseas.

Note: Rates and valuation methods are subject to change through Finance Acts and KRA updates. Always verify the latest figures with the Kenya Revenue Authority or a licensed clearing agent before purchasing or shipping a vehicle. Rapidlex Logistics can assist with accurate duty estimates and full customs clearance.
